Meet Marine Biologist Dr. Jessica Reichert!
by special request
We librarians are always saying "Explore More" to encourage keiki to follow their own interests. In June, readers expressed interest in hearing from Dr. Reichert about her work as a marine biologist. She is graciously joining us next week to show and tell us all about it!
I'm Dr. Jessica Reichert, a marine biologist living and working in Hawai‘i. I study how plastic pollution is impacting coral reefs and look for ways to protect these ecosystems so they can continue to thrive for future generations. A lot of plastic ends up in the ocean and breaks down into tiny particles called microplastics, which can float in the water or get stuck on the reef. These small plastics can stress corals, make it harder for them to grow, and even affect tiny baby corals when they’re just starting out.
My work here in Hawai‘i focuses on helping these baby corals by designing small underwater homes where they can settle safely, away from predators, waves, and pollution. These structures help more young corals survive, which is an important step in rebuilding damaged reefs.
I moved to Hawai‘i with my family two years ago to be close to the ocean I study. I love combining science, technology, and creativity to find new solutions that support coral reefs and the many people and animals who depend on them.
We will also celebrate our readers and their accomplishments in the Summer Reading Challenge (with prize drawings!)
